Digital Empowerment Foundation
Submitted by editor on Mon, 04/27/2009 - 13:21Digital Empowerment Foundation, a Delhi based not-for-profit organization was registered on December 2002, under the "Societies Registration Act XXI of 1860" to find solutions to bridge the digital divide. With no political affiliations, it was founded by Osama Manzar to uplift the downtrodden and to create economic and commercial viability using Information Communication and Technology as means. It was actively started in the year 2003 after the founder director left his software company to seriously pursue the aims and objectives of Digital Empowerment Foundation.
A BACKGROUND NOTE
Raghav FM Mansoorpur
Submitted by editor on Sun, 04/26/2009 - 00:30Rural and discreet Raghav Mahto started the community FM radio using a fifty rupee technology device that served the entire Mansoorpur village in his Vaishali District of Bihar as well as adjoining villages. He and his RJ (Radio Jockey) friend Sambhu started an innovative Rural FM service which enabled villagers and the local community to benefit from various services it offered. People at large benefited from announcements, messages, entertainments that touched their health, educational, trade, commerce, entertainment needs on day-to-day basis. Using an innovative knowledge enhancement & awareness driven simple technological platform, Raghav and his community FM served community needs and services in every possible way. The community FM was for the community and by the community, driven by community needs and demands. What was more unique was the manner in which the community embraced Raghav FM and become emotionally well attached to it.
Namma Dhwani in the Classroom
Submitted by editor on Sun, 04/26/2009 - 00:29Namma Dhwani's school audio program uses both conventional media-audio and new media including internet and multimedia to provide comprehensive education for the school children of Budikote village in Karnataka, near Bangalore. Namma Dhwani has a digital audio production centre which uses mixed media to disseminate local information. In this model, the audio production centre acts as a hub with other reception points becoming the spokes. In 1999 a baseline survey conducted to assess information needs and preferred media revealed that the community wanted locally relevant information on crops, market prices, health (particularly women's health), etc. They wanted this information through audio channels mainly because of low comprehension, poverty and literacy levels. They expressed the wish that information be broadcast in their own dialect, which is a mix of Kannada & Telugu.
Havel Vani Samudayik Radio Initiative
Submitted by editor on Sun, 04/26/2009 - 00:28The Havel Vaani Samudayik Radio Initiative has been ongoing in Chamba district of Uttaranchal for the past 4 years. The community members have a rudimentary community media centre with one computer and a couple of mini disc recorders. They regularly produce programmes on local issues like health, dowry, female infanticide, caste practices and improving agricultural practices.

Krishi vahani named "Vasundhara vahani 90.4 MHz", a community radio service catering exclusively to farmers within a 30-km radius of the tehsil Baramati of Pune district.
